10/01  Mikeco, the Cat 39

Having taken the brunt of Mikeco's splendid straight right hand, my heart wilted for a second but no, no, I can't wince under a blow, I'll be damned if I do. I took off the slippers which I was wearing on my feet and fought back against her, using the sole of them as a shield (the sole was covered with artificial leather).

After a tussle which seemed to me to last for more than 15 or 20 minutes, though it might actually have been much shorter, I finally succeeded to zip close the mouth of the laundry net!! Despite the enormously murderous atmosphere that Mikeco was still creating, now she was in the laundry net anyhow.

Hurraaaay, hurraaaaaay, now she's in! I got Mikeco inside the net!! Having gone over more than half of the important task which I was given from JoOusama, I leaped and danced with joy throwing a contemptuous glance at Mikeco.

I was feeling a little sorry for Mikeco to force her into the small laundry net early on, but since this was actually my first time to get her in the net all by myself, I decided that I should start moving ahead of time, so I had started the whole process earlier than the time to leave for the veterinarian.

Good thing that I've started my capturing mission ahead of time, ha-ha my decision turned out to be right. As I was feeling pleased with myself, something seemed to trickle down from my hand ... .

At a casual glance, my eyes caught sight of ... blood ... drippinggg!! And it was gushing out, almost gurgling ... .

I was bleeding from where Mikeco had struck her hooked claw into with her splendid straight right hand, "slush!".aiiiieeeeeeettt! Wwwhaatttt's all thiiiissss blood!?

I hurriedly pulled out a bunch of tissue paper, covered the wound pressing hard against it, while I also lifted up the laundry net with a "hup" Mikeco still battering inside. then I put the cat in the net in a tote bag, zipped it up leaving a little opened to take in some air. Now the packing was finished.

Pheeeww.

Now. As I gently removed the soft blob of tissue paper, ooohh. The dripping seemed to have become slower than before.

Gooood. So it wasn't such a bad wound after all. Well, that must have been so. I should have remembered that it couldn't be such a serious injury with just a cat's strike of a claw or two.

Though as I wiped away some blood off the wound to see how it was, uh-oh.

Isn't this a small but clean hole slushed at the base of my left index finger, eh?

The wound itself was quite small (since it was the size of a cat's claw ...), but it seemed unexpectedly deep. Looked like it bit halfway into my finger.

And maybe because I was relieved having finished packing Mikeco into the tote bag, all set and ready waiting for me to carry her on my shoulder and to the veterinarian, the wound ... it started to hurt.

I quickly disinfected the wound and though I had a little difficulty because of where the wound was, I coiled a couple of Band-Aids tightly around the wound, carried the tote bag on my shoulder with another "hup" and headed for the veterinarian.

Mikeco was still going wild inside the tote bag on the way. You don't seem to know when to give up, do you little fella, I thought. Even after we'd reached the veterinarian she still kept being violent, that we received a compliment(?) from the doctor, "That means she's still got enough strength to go wild".

The wound closed up by the next day.

However, I felt a throbbing pain from somewhere deep down inside the base of my left index finger, as I practiced guitar every day. The pain lasted for about a week, gradually faded and before long it was mostly gone.

A month had passed since then.

I heard that when cats with cat AIDS stop eating, they usually won't be able to hold out more than a week.

Mikeco's ambulant treatment went on for more than 3 weeks and we received another compliment(?) from the doctor, "Isn't she a tough girl ...". But by the last week of her life, Mikeco was no longer able to even walk on her own.

Mikeco who had resisted that bitterly, no longer did. She left it to our mercy and didn't move much, while me or JoOusama put her in the tote bag to take her to the veterinarian.

Nevertheless, Mikeco raised a feeble moan saying "Pffff," at the veterinarian's until her last day.

I've written before that Mikeco didn't know when to give up, but to Mikeco who was a stubborn rough neck, this last month might have been the biggest resistance throughout her 13 years of life.

I think that Mikeco fought her very best against her destiny called "death" with a strong will and her instinct "to live". I guess it should be all right to say, that she paid the debt of nature in her own style until the last minute and she paid it well. Now, that's something and I'm proud of her.

On August 1st, one life passed us by and left our house.

That day I was out and wasn't at home, but JoOusama kindly took the trouble to call me up where I was at, to tell me that Mikeco has passed away dissolving into tears ... additionally, I knew that she was shedding crocodile tears.

A little while ago when we were taking Mikeco for ambulant treatment every day, JoOusama had once blurted out something like "why doesn't the doctor suggest euthanasia when the cat's quite beyond recovery?".

I was dismayed. What are you talking about?

Look at Mikeco, can't you see she's trying so hard? She's rallying her last ounce of strength to live! How could JoOusama even think of such a thing when Mikeco has been struggling ever so hard to live ... .

10/26  Mikeco, the Cat 64

Oh how could she, how could she ... . And you, JoOusama, you old lady, are you trying to take Mikeco's life away for your own purpose when the cat's desperately trying to live, eh? How can you be so selfish?

10/27  Mikeco, the Cat 65

Selfish ...thinking it over, maybe I too might have been selfish for forcibly taking Mikeco whose days were already numbered, to the veterinarian every day while she obstinately refused to go. In that sense, perhaps it couldn't be helped to draw the criticism, "you're no different".

What I was doing could have been just an action of self-satisfaction, to convince and reassure myself that I was doing the best I could for Mikeco.

Though, here's what I think.

Would it be allowed for some third person to go and take away one-sidedly, the life of a creature who is trying "to live" wihth a will "to live" just for the sake of that person's conveience?

Mikeco had tried to eat willingly at least before she's lost her strength. But every time she put some food in her mouth, her disease induced vomiting that she couldn't ingest it. I think that means that it could be judged at that point, that Mikeco did have the will "to live".

However, JoOusama used the word "euthanasia" so lightly for such big reasons, physical and economic burdens ... .
